Hair Comes the Comb makes house calls

What’s better? Having to wait in a daunting line at the salon or your hairstylist pulling up to your driveway and servicing you from the comfort of your home?

Hair Come The Comb, a mobile salon created by Alicia Pilalas in 2020, was born like many businesses during the pandemic. The mobile salon services all of the South Shore and beyond, including Brockton, Bridgewater, Abington and Whitman.

Pilalas, who has been a hairstylist for 20 years, decided to venture off and start her own business.

During the shutdown, many clients booked Pilalas to do backyard and driveway hair cuts. However, the increase in clientele led her to think outside the box and offer a more convenient salon experience longterm

After watching a friend convert her van into a mobile home to travel around the country, the Pembroke resident’s brain started spinning.

“I started blowing up and would get an insane amount of requests for house calls, and then I thought to open a mobile salon,” Pilalas said.

She went down the rabbit hole of research and watching others turn their vans into  livable, beautiful homes.

That’s when the idea of starting a mobile salon came to fruition.

Once the hairstylist had done her research, it was time to search for the perfect vehicle.

Coming up with the idea was much easier than executing it.

The quest to find a large cargo van during the quarantine was challenging and the hardest part of the process, Pilalas said.

It took seven months to find and secure a van with an additional six months to transform a regular cargo van into a glamour mobile salon. Pilalas traveled as far as Maine but was out of luck in the search.

“It was frustrating to wait that long to find a van and get the salon up and running. I was eager to work, and I knew it would be a hit. A mobile salon is so convenient for clients, especially for my elderly clients who can’t leave the house often,” Pilalas said.

The salon on wheels opened officially in February 2022, bringing the full salon experience to the region. Pilalas works with all hair types, and her most popular services include customer color, blowouts and haircuts.

“I’m curly hair-friendly, and I can do perms, relaxers, keratin treatments and Brazilian blowouts,” Pilalas said.

Not only does Pilalas offer color and haircuts, but she also does lash extensions, body waxing, hair treatments and special occasion services.

Pilalas invested more than $110,000 dollars in bringing her dream to life.

“It was a huge investment, but it feels incredible and empowering to be a business owner,” Pilalas said.

Although becoming an entrepreneur was difficult, Pilalas wouldn’t trade it for the world.

A rewarding aspect of being a salon owner is creating your own schedule, being your own boss and making people feel confident, Pilalas said.

Pilalas doesn’t mind making a house call at 6 a.m. to ensure her client is confident before heading to work. Or even working late past regular business hours of a 9-5 salon.
