Somehow, October is already over and winter is (sadly) on the way.

But regardless of your preference when it comes to the seasons, there are some pros to temperatures cooling off. For one, it’s an excuse to burn more scented candles than you normally would to set a cozy atmosphere in your home. Plus, there’s no better time to indulge and slather your skin and hair in your richest creams and conditioners — or use nourishing makeup to give your skin a pop of color. So that’s exactly what we did.

In October we treated ourself to new makeup products, and old reliable skin and haircare faves.

Discover all of our picks for the month, below.

Alchimie Forever Kantic Calming Cream

“I am 38, and over the pandemic I have started to look my age plus 10 while becoming more sensitized and reactive to products I used to love. A rep for Alchimie Forever, a Swiss, dermatologist-founded brand, urged me to look past this clinical packaging, because it’s all about “the goop inside,” and now I’m telling you the same. The mid-weight gel-cream is great for everyday use. As soon as I apply it, my splotchy, red areas fade, my skin plumps, and I appear less washed-out and tired. It absorbs immediately, making my face primed for makeup application, but I’ve stopped reflexively reaching for my foundation — I look human enough without it for the first time in years. Ingredients like blueberries, grapeseeds, jojoba, and vitamin E make the vegan formula ideal for reactive skin like mine, but it still gives a satisfying little tingle that lets me know it’s working.” — Laura Norkin, Deputy Editor

Hey Dewy Wireless Facial Humidifier

“During cold winter months, the air in my home becomes really dry — this seems to take its toll on my skin and hair. I purchased a humidifier a while ago and it helped improve the moisture in my apartment, but the size of it was inconvenient. Not only was it a chore to carry between rooms, but it was an eye sore in my apartment. I recently bought the Hey Dewy Humidifier, and I couldn’t be happier. It’s a cute, wireless, portable humidifier that I can take with me wherever I go. I keep it on my desk, by my bed, I even travel with it. It helps to moisturize my skin and hydrate my hair with micro-splashes of cool water that last about eight hours on one single charge. I also love that 10% of all Hey Dewy sales goes to supporting clean water initiatives like The Water Project.” — Omenaa Boakye, Contributing Beauty Writer

Hyper Skin Brightening Dark Spot Vitamin C Serum

“Breakouts and hyperpigmentation are my two major skin concerns, and this vitamin C serum tackles both. On top of brightening vitamin C, the formula is also infused with exfoliating kojic acid to minimize dark spots from acne and sun damage, salicylic acid and turmeric to prevent future breakouts, plus hyaluronic acid to hydrate for plumper, dewier skin. While Hyper’s serum first enticed me because it combines a few of my skincare steps in a single product, I also love the gel texture because it absorbs into my skin quickly without leaving any sticky residue and doesn’t pill under moisturizer and sunscreen.” — Erin Lukas, Beauty Editor

Briogeo Curl Charisma Rice Amino + Avocado Hydrating & Defining Mask

“Being a beauty editor definitely has its perks — one of which being you get to test out the hottest products on the market. But as much as that’s a blessing, it can also be a curse. After trying out a few haircare collections that clearly were not made to cater to my texture (although the brands claimed the products are made for “everyone”), my curls needed some rescuing and I knew Briogeo wouldn’t let me down. After using the line’s co-wash, and OGX’s Keratin Oil Conditioner to detangle, I slathered this mask on and went under my hair steamer for around 30 minutes. Once I rinsed it out, my hair was silky smooth, super shiny, and ready to be styled into two-stand twists. God bless you for creating this magical formula, Nancy Twine.” — Kayla Greaves, Senior Beauty Editor

Garnier Fructis Nourishing Treat Conditioner

“I happened to be shopping in a physical drugstore for the first time all year on the same day when my haircut passed its expiration date, and my strands and ends felt so dead and dry as if my hair was barely even hair anymore. I impulse bought this conditioner because the “natural” branding caught my eye (I’m not made of steel!). It smells like a day at the beach and gave me the shiniest, bounciest hair I’ve had in a while. There’s no silicone, the vegan formula is animal-friendly, and it moisturized the hell out of my hair with no weigh-down. All for about $6.” — Laura

Victoria Beckham Cheeky Posh Cream Blush Stick

“I’ve always been a cream blush fan because I think they have the most natural-looking finish, but I’ll be the first to admit that many formulas don’t have staying power or enough pigment. However, Victoria Beckham’s blush stick solves all of my cream blush struggles. The formula offers impressive color payoff, you can build up if you want a bolder finish, and it doesn’t slide off or fade in a few hours. I wore it under my mask and the rosy flush I gave myself using the shade “Major” was still intact. Not to mention, just like the rest of Beckham’s line, the stick’s tortoise print packaging is gorgeous. But would you really expect anything less than chic from Posh Spice?” — Erin

Krigler Opus Tango Pleasure Gardenia 79 Scented Candle

“There is truly nothing I hate more than winter — nothing. So as soon as fall rolls around, I start to get miserable and annoyed at Mother Nature (I love you otherwise, I promise). But while I can’t control the weather, what I can do is a set a warm atmosphere in my apartment, close my curtains, and pretend like whatever is happening outside doesn’t really exist. This vibrant orange candle from Krigler automatically brightens up my mood, while the calming and uplifting notes of jasmine, vanilla, and mimosa make me feel super cozy as I binge-watch Guy’s Grocery Games under three blankets. All things considered, it truly doesn’t get any better than that.” — Kayla

Aunt Jackie’s Aloe & Mint Hydrate Me! Leave-in Conditioning Crème

“Throughout the fall my hair craves moisture, so I’m always looking for products that can provide long-lasting hydration. Aunt Jackie’s Aloe & Mint Hydrate Me! Leave-in Conditioning Crème does exactly what it says on the tube — hydrate! The creamy leave-in drenches my hair with a therapeutic combination of aloe, mint, hempseed, and marshmallow root to help stimulate the scalp and roots, strengthen the hair, and lock in moisture, without causing a heavy build-up or clogging the pores of my scalp. I feel good about using this leave-in because the recipe is free of silicones, parabens, mineral oil, and petrolatum.” — Omenaa
