Helen Mirren, 76, Proves Long Hair Looks Good on Women at Any Age

  • Helen Mirren, 76, rocked incredibly long gray hair at the 75th Cannes Film Festival.
  • The award-winning actress styled her hair in a platinum high ponytail paired with a metallic gown and a dramatic smokey eye.
  • Mirren previously opened up about going gray, saying “Going gray is to be encouraged—that’s not to say you can’t have fun with your hair, because it’s a very important part of how you feel about yourself.”

As the 75th Annual Cannes Film Festival came to an end, Helen Mirren wanted to make sure we were all left with a little something to remember her by—and boy did she deliver. The When Nature Calls star was serving up looks on the red carpet Friday. The actress attended the screening of Mother And Son (Un Petit Frere) wearing a gorgeous metallic gown, diamond drop earrings, and straight, long (XXL!) platinum gray hair.

Needless to say, she turned heads. But for us, it wasn’t her sparkly dress that stole the show, it was her hair. In fact, we’d say that Mirren’s extra-long hair is concrete proof that women of any age can rock long tresses. The star traded in her typical medium-length locks for platinum extensions that were styled in a sleek half ponytail, falling all the way to her waist. She even gave us a mid-carpet hair flip!

The look was created by L’Oréal Paris global hair artist Stephane Lancien, which is fitting since Mirren is a L’Oréal Paris ambassador. Pro hairstylist and Evo’s international creative director Tom Smith took to Instagram to break the look down. “You won’t believe who owns this hair,” he said in a video. “Helen Mirren!”

Smith explained that long length is a trend for summer, and he loves that Mirren rocked it. “I think this might be the coolest thing I’ve ever seen,” he said. “I love challenging age stereotypes and I just think that [Mirren] is so smart and so bold for doing something so current, so out there, and so unexpected.”

“What a statement. She looks amazing,” he added.

Although Mirren’s extensions were platinum, the star’s natural gray-meets-white color peeked through—something she’s quite proud of. In fact, she said going gray was an “easy” transition for her.

“I have to say it was very easy for me because my hair was always blonde. I was a natural blonde and although it was quite dark at times, in the summertime when I’d spent time in the sun, it would basically go white,” she said. “So the process of me losing the color of my hair was very easy—it just looked more and more as if I had been in the sun, but year-round.”

She praised other “spectacular” women who have made the leap and encouraged others to go through with it. “Going gray is to be encouraged—that’s not to say you can’t have fun with your hair, because it’s a very important part of how you feel about yourself. People should do whatever makes them feel comfortable,” she said.

As for how she keeps her luscious locks looking their best, she’s said she uses a more minimal approach. Aside from events, she never uses heat on her hair and only dries it. She also previously told RedBook that she uses Kiehl’s shampoo and conditioner.

We can’t wait to see what’s next for The Queen and Tournament of Houses star. Until she serves us another mind-blowing look, we’ll have to occupy ourselves with some of her beauty must-haves.
