If you’d have told me 2 years ago that TikTok would be my most referenced social media platform, for everything from recipes to skincare hacks, I’d have laughed and continued to scroll through my IG feed.
Yet, here I am scrolling through the countless videos filling up my ‘for you page’, in search of the best beauty products the internet has to offer.
If a beauty product goes viral in a 30-second TikTok, it’s likely to sell out. And fast. That was the case with Glow Recipe’s Watermelon Glow Niacinamide Dew Drops after beauty TikToker Mikayla Nogueira used them in a make-up tutorial and exclaimed ‘I sh*t you not, that was the best foundation application I’ve ever had in my life’. The video went viral and garnered around 11.7 million views and 2.5 million likes. The same story goes for Charlotte Tilbury’s Beauty Light Wand and Clinique’s Black Honey Almost Lipstick.
But, are these viral products really worth the hype? Read on to find out my honest thoughts when I tried out 5 of TikTok’s favourite formulas.
Charlotte Tilbury Beauty Light Wand
First up is the sell-out Beauty Light Wand in shade ‘Glowgasm’. I think it was Singer Maddison Beer who first made this product famous after she used it in a get ready with me video. It subsequently sold out in retailers. So when it finally came back online, I knew i had to try it.
With olive undertones, I tend to gravitate towards more golden and peachy tones when it comes to blush, but this is a very cool toned, perfect pink with a subtle shimmer – and I have to say I really liked it. It’s really blendable and a beautiful colour. I wouldn’t use this daily in my make-up routine, as it is a little on the pink side, but the formula is a winner. Oh, also it doesn’t budge so it’s no wonder it sold out! 8/10 from me.
Supergoop! Glowscreen
SuperGoop! Glowscreen is a very slightly tinted SPF 30, with broad spectrum coverage and a subtle shimmer. When I tell you, I am obsessed with this product and use it every day, I’m not exaggerating. It gives you the most beautiful, glowing base and is perfect on the days you don’t feel like make-up, but works incredibly as a base under foundation too. An all-round winner, and I’ll definitely be stocking up before it sells out again.
Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Niacinamide Drops
I can’t scroll through TikTok without coming across Glow Recipe. The brand has made a name for itself thanks to its beautifully packaged products that deliver on results.
All Glow Recipe products are very heavily scented, so if this isn’t your thing you might find this product too much. For me, I love a fruity scented product, so this one was ideal as the light watermelon scent made me think of summer.
As for the product itself, I can see why there are so many rave reviews; it’s a gel-like texture, but applies like a serum, and is the first skincare highlighter that uses skin-friendly ingredients to give you the ultimate glow. It’s amazing to wear on its own, or under make-up for a fresh, glow-y base. This is one you’ll want to try!
Rose Inc Tinted Serum
I feel like I’ve tried every foundation and tinted serum under the sun at this point, so it takes a real stand out product to blow me away, and this one definitely did. Rose INC’s (founded by model Rosie Huntington-Whitley) Skin Enhance luminous Tinted Serum was designed to hydrate the skin, while providing a light, glowing coverage.
The serum itself is really unique, with small encapsulated foundation particles submerged in the serum formula, which disperses as it’s buffed into the skin. It gives a sort of airbrushed finish, while also being undetectable on the skin. A little goes a long way and I’ve found myself reaching for this every day. It’s amazing and my new go-to, especially for the warmer months when my go-to products are lighter formulas.
Drunk Elephant D-Bronzi Anti-Pollution Sunshine Drops
I’ve never actually tried anything from Drunk Elephant before. I’ve heard amazing things their products and, in particular, the D-Bronzi Anti-Pollution Sunshine Drops. The brand itself prides itself on an ingredient-elimination philosophy, meaning you won’t find any of the following ‘Suspicious 6’ – drying alcohols, silicones, SLS, chemical screens, essential oils or fragrances/dyes.
The drops in question are Drunk Elephant’s answer to bronzer. A serum formula, you can mix these drops in with your moisturiser for a bronzed glow or apply directly to the face. I tried both ways and I think I’m still a little pale for the first option, but it will be a great alternative to foundation in the summer months when my skin tone is a little darker. When I buffed into the areas of my face where the light hits, it gave me such a nice bronzed glow.
